A swimming pool is a valuable asset, offering relaxation and recreation, especially during the hot summer months. However, when something goes wrong—like a leak—it can turn into a costly and stressful problem if left unaddressed. Identifying a pool leak early is crucial to maintaining the health of your pool and avoiding expensive repairs. Here are some key signs and steps to determine if your pool has a leak.

Signs That Your Pool May Have a Leak

1. Unexplained Water Loss

It’s normal for pools to lose water due to evaporation, especially in hot climates or during the summer. However, if you notice a significant drop in water levels—more than 1/4 inch per day—a leak might be the cause. Use the "bucket test" (explained below) to rule out evaporation as the culprit.

2. Increased Water Bills

If you’re regularly refilling your pool and your water bill has unexpectedly spiked, it could indicate a leak. Pools with leaks often require constant topping off to maintain the water level.

3. Wet or Soft Spots Around the Pool

Pay attention to the area surrounding your pool. If you notice wet spots, mushy ground, or pooling water where there shouldn’t be any, it’s a strong indication of a leak.

4. Cracks or Gaps in the Pool Structure

Visible cracks in your pool’s surface or tiles can be a clear sign that water is escaping. Even small cracks can lead to significant leaks over time.

5. Loss of Pool Chemicals

If you’re adding chemicals more frequently than usual, it might be due to water loss caused by a leak. A leaking pool dilutes chemicals faster, making it harder to maintain proper water balance.

6. Equipment Issues

Listen to your pool equipment. Air entering the pool pump, unusual noises, or poor performance from the pump, filter, or heater could signal a leak in the plumbing or other components.

How to Confirm a Pool Leak

1. Perform the Bucket Test

The bucket test is a simple and effective way to determine if water loss is due to evaporation or a leak:

  1. Fill a bucket with pool water to about 1 inch below the rim.

  2. Place the bucket on a step in your pool, ensuring the water level inside the bucket matches the pool’s water level outside.

  3. Mark both water levels with tape or a marker.

  4. Leave the bucket undisturbed for 24-48 hours, ensuring the pool is not in use.

  5. Check the water levels. If the pool’s water level has dropped more significantly than the water in the bucket, you likely have a leak.

2. Inspect the Pool’s Components

  • Skimmers and Return Lines: Check for cracks or leaks around these areas.

  • Pump and Filter System: Look for water drips or moisture near the equipment.

  • Tiles and Grout: Inspect for cracks or loose tiles that could indicate structural issues.

3. Monitor the Groundwater

For in-ground pools, excess water in the ground surrounding the pool can indicate a significant leak. Consider professional assistance to evaluate underground plumbing.

The Importance of Addressing Pool Leaks

Ignoring a pool leak can lead to:

  • Higher water and energy bills

  • Structural damage to your pool and surrounding areas

  • Increased maintenance costs

  • Inefficient pool equipment performance

If you’ve confirmed a leak, it’s important to act quickly. Small leaks can lead to extensive damage if left untreated. By identifying and addressing leaks promptly, you can preserve the integrity of your pool and save money in the long run.
